(If you have or are currently serving then let me answer that for you by saying “yes,” and by thanking you for what you do. This after all, was inspired by what you have already given us)
Memorial Day was originally created as a day of remembrance for those who have died giving service to our country, but it is also a day to honor those that have made sacrifices in their lives to provide service. There are many things that have been given up by thousands of men and women across the country that you will never hear of.
They did this all because they felt that there was a higher purpose, above that of just themselves. To serve for your country is to put your own life on hold so that you can benefit that of the greater good, the community.
The question you need to ask yourself is “Have I earned and honored their sacrifices or have I wasted them?”
You First Have To Grasp What They Have Given Up
Over the past week or two, I have treated (as a physical therapist) several service men, and families with sons and daughters in the military that have given me a deeper connection to the impact of their decision.
You see the watering eyes and regret that crosses over their face as they mention the 1st birthdays, the first tee ball games, not being able to watch their brother or sister walk down the aisle……. not being there for the last hours of a passing family member.
These are memories that will never be created for them. Memories that no camera footage can replace. These are moments in their lives that they will never get to replay. These are moments in OUR lives that we forever hold on to and cherish, but they never experience.
This is what they CHOSE to give up so that YOU and I could go on with our daily lives.
But are you we wasting them?
There Is No Day To Commemorate You Sitting On The Couch
They did not CHOOSE to make these sacrifices in their lives so that you can sit on the couch.
They did not CHOOSE to make these sacrifices so that you could live “comfortably.”
They did not CHOOSE to make these sacrifices so that you could live off government handouts.
They did not CHOOSE to watch you waste it…
They CHOSE to do it… so that YOU… could live an EXTRAORDINARY life.
But for you to live that extraordinary life, you must also make sacrifices. Don’t worry, I’m not talking about life or death situations, that only applies to our service men and women.
The sacrifices that you must make are MINISCULE compared to theirs.
And remember, they are doing this for YOU.
AND THEY DON’T EVEN KNOW YOU!
Do you know what sacrifices most people are UNWILLING to make?
- Watching less TV
- Working an extra 1 or 2 hours
- Doing something because it makes them feel “uncomfortable”
- Losing 1 hour of sleep
- Performing work on a weekend
- Missing their favorite TV show or sporting event
The list goes on…
Ask yourself: Am I living a life that would make them look back at their decision and say “I would do it all over again.”
Take the steps that you have been unwilling to take. Ask yourself “What would an extraordinary life look like for me?” Then figure out what you need to do in order to make it come true and get started TODAY!
Remember, there is no holiday for sitting on a couch.
